Chicago Theatres: Cadillac Palace Theatre

Published: November 17, 2006

The Cadillac Palace Theatre remained nameless for many decades.

Opening on October 4, 1926, the Cadillac Palace Theatre was designed by well-known theater architects Cornelius and George Rapp. The brothers conceived a style that renovators painstakingly kept up in the restoration process. This included low-hanging ceilings, an Art-Deco restyling of French Restoration's romanticism, closely concentric seating layouts consisting of half-loops, and a luxurious ruby red and aged gold color scheme. The entire theater house is said to be "inspired by the palaces of Fontainebleau and Versailles"—hence, naming it the Cadillac Palace Theatre.

However, working backward from the stage, the real appetizing feature begins in the lobby of the Cadillac Palace Theatre. Ornate mirrors wall the lobby’s interior; the flooring and columns are decorated in a tastefully regal white and violet marble. Elaborate wood etchings and gold leaf decorations give it a Baroque era feel. The Cadillac Palace Theatre's lobby often is the talk of many theatergoers; it is a delectable appetizer to the feast beyond it.

The Cadillac Palace Theatre started as a vaudevillian house, like its sister the Shubert Theatre, but converted to a cinema during the 1930s decline of vaudeville. The Bismarck Hotel bought it in the 1970s, took out the seats and converted it into a banquet building.

But the Cadillac Palace Theatre was not officially named the Bismarck Theatre until 1984, at which point in time it was used as a concert hall for rock and roll musical acts. Finally, the 1990s saw its return to a theater for the performing arts, and the seats were put back in; the Cadillac Palace Theatre emerged in 1999.

At 151 West Randolph Street, the Cadillac Palace Theatre sits in the heart of Chicago's "Theatretown" and is one of many mediums for New Broadway. This Chicago theater brings New York shows to a Midwestern city with Chicago flair.
