Planning a trip to Chicago in the near future? One of the most popular current attractions is the smash hit Wicked the Musical. Part of Chicago's “Broadway in Chicago” series, this musical has taken the city by storm. Premiering in 2004, Wicked the Musical currently is enjoying an open-end run.
“Broadway in Chicago” is a popular theater initiative created in July 2000 between a joint of venture of two of the largest theater producers and owners, Clear Water Channel Entertainment and the Nederlander Organization.
It provides a series of popular musicals and plays hosted by three major theaters in Chicago: the LaSalle Bank Theatre, the Ford Center for the Performing Arts (Oriental Theatre) and the Cadillac Theatre. “Broadway in Chicago” has rejuvenated the city's cultural and theater communities and has brought major success to the Chicago Theatre District.
Wicked the Musical is the result of a successful collaboration. It features music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz, who also wrote the music and lyrics for the well known musicals Pippin and Godspell. Famous songs from the musical include “Defying Gravity” and “Popular.” The musical staging is by Tony award winner Wayne Cilento and is directed by Tony Award winner Joe Mantello.
Wicked the Musical is based on the bestselling novel by Gregory Maguire. It focuses on the two famous witches from the beloved story The Wizard of Oz. The musical takes place long before Dorothy and her house land in the Land of Oz. It presents the back story of both witches: Elphaba, who later becomes the Wicked Witch of the West, and Glinda, who becomes the Good Witch. The story revolves around the witches’ budding friendship during their college days and provides an explanation for why each witch ended up on her chosen path.
Wicked the Musical has become famous for its elaborate staging, strong musical numbers, engaging performances and quirky inside humor for fans of The Wizard of Oz. Wicked the Musical runs approximately two hours and 43 minutes, with one 15-minute intermission.
The show is performed at the Ford Center for the Performing Arts, Oriental Theatre, located at 24 West Randolph Street in the heart of the Chicago Loop Theatre District.
