Chicago plays host to an almost innumerable number of rock venues, catering to a cornucopia of musical tastes, audiences and budgets. As diverse as the performances and the audiences they attract, big or small, Chicago rock venues have unique histories, decor and have imprinted memories onto the many lucky enough to attend a Chicago concert.
Chicago is home to several large rock venues. Although lacking the intimacy of smaller Chicago rock venues, places such as the Allstate Arena, First Midwest Bank Amphitheater in Tinley Park, the United Center in Chicago, and recently opened Toyota Park in Bridgeview provide first class amenities and world class acts.
Allstate Arena in nearby Rosemont, Illinois, is not a dedicated rock venue, playing home to an array of Chicago's sports teams, such as the American Hockey League's Chicago Wolves, the Arena Football League's Chicago Rush as well as the DePaul Blue Demons. However, when not entertaining Chicago's legions of sports fans, the Allstate Arena draws Chicago rock fans with performances by groups as diverse as new-wave legends Depeche Mode, progressive metal favorites Tool, heavy metal super group Iron Maiden, and singer/ songwriter Barry Manilow.
First Midwest Bank Amphitheater, an outdoor Chicago rock venue in nearby Tinley Park, Illinois, features many nationally known acts and different festivals. Acts featured at First Midwest Bank Amphitheater include classic rock favorites such as Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young as well as modern rock favorites Sheryl Crow and the Dave Matthews Band. In addition to traditional concerts, First Midwest Bank Amphitheater also features the annual Vans Warped Tour.
The United Center in Chicago, in addition to featuring the home games of the NBA's Chicago Bulls and the NHL's Chicago Blackhawks, is also a prominent rock venue in Chicago. Recently musicians such as classic rock and blues musician Eric Clapton and folk/pop singer Sheryl Crow have been featured at the United Center.
In addition to traditional rock venues in Chicago, places such as Grant Park and Millennium Park play host not only to the world renowned Chicago Jazz Festival and Chicago Blues Festival, but have also featured Lollapalooza. Although Grant Park and Millennium Park may lack the expected atmosphere of other rock venues in Chicago, the Chicago sky-line and the atmosphere of the city lend their own uniqueness.
The most memorable rock venues in Chicago are what have come to be known as the Holy Trinity of Chicago music: The Vic, The Metro and The Riviera. Compared to their larger counterparts, the three venues reach capacity in the thousands, making for a unique, intimate experience.
Both the Riviera in the Uptown neighborhood and the Vic in Chicago's Lakeview neighborhood feature emerging local acts as well as more established musicians. In addition to local acts and local favorites, The Vic has featured 80’s bands such as the BoDeans, Tears for Fears, and Skid Row; hard rock acts such as Iron Maiden and Motorhead; country rock musicians the Jayhawks and Wilco; and progressive rock bands the Dave Matthews Band, Chicago's Poi Dog Pondering, Soundgarden and Collective Soul.
The Metro is considered the hallmark of rock venues in Chicago. While going along with their mission statement to "bring a cross-platform of the best local, regional and national emerging artists to Chicago," the Metro has played host to a multitude of bands "before they were big" such as New Order, Depeche Mode, and R.E.M. in the eighties. The nineties saw the rise of the Smashing Pumpkins, Urge Overkill, Liz Phair and Veruca Salt; and recently bands such as Alkaline Trio and Fall Out Boy got their start at the Metro. In addition to local favorites and emerging Chicago artists, the Metro has played host to legendary artists such as James Brown, Iggy Pop, George Clinton, Joe Strummer, Prince as well as Bob Dylan.
Although the bands that perform at the Metro, the Vic and the Riviera come from a wide variety of rock music and vary in regards to their popularity, what makes these Chicago rock venues a memorable experience is the intimate nature of the shows and the sense that you are part of something special.
